Did You Know.....
.....that DeLand Majik won a $12,000 purse at the Malevsky Memorial Cup in Russia?

It was a good trip for DeLand Majik. The Malevsky Memorial Cup winner of 2002 trained for a few days in Russia, defended the title successfully, made a statement about the current top position in the world and brings $12,000 back home for the team account. Was it a walk in the park? A closer look at the scoring table shows that Majik had to work for the money. The competition for the first place was not as tough as it was in 2002 when Airspeed Vertical competed in Russia. However, Majik had to give up the highest scores in two rounds and tied for the highest scores in four other rounds.

The two challengers who tried to make it as difficult as possible for the DeLand team came from Russia and Italy. Sinapsi PD, the Italian national team,  was expected to perform on a world class scoring level after they had just posted a 21.1 meet average at the Italian Nationals last week. Sinapsi tied Majik in three rounds and posted the highest score of the whole competition with a 32 in round five (F-O-Q-H-6).

The best Russian team, the Sky Panthers, ended up only one single point behind Sinapsi. The performance level of the Russian 4-way teams was unknown until this event. The Malevsky Memorial Cup now showed clearly that this team will not just watch the race for the medals at the world meet from behind. The Sky Panthers also tied Majik in three rounds and posted the highest score in round four. If Sinapsi PD has become a serious contender for the medals at the World Championship 2003, then this Russian team has now joined the elite club, as well.

And Majik? Fact is that the DeLand team will not compete in France since the Golden Knights won the USPA Nationals 2002 and qualified as the national team. Fact is also that Majik has lost only one competition in team history - the USPA Nationals 2002. Other than that, Majik is still on top of the world at this point. The Sky Panthers and Sinapsi PD managed to win or tie a round here and there. But Majik was still nine points ahead of Italy in second place after ten rounds in Russia. And nine points after ten rounds means a difference of almost 1.0 average.

The DeLand team will not be able to show this year whether they are the best team in the world or not. The Golden Knights, Sinapsi PD, the DeLand Norgies, Sebastian XL and the Sky Panthers will challenge France Maubeuge in September and fight it out for the top positions. Majik will have to wait for another month until they will have the next chance to qualify for the world meet in 2004. The USPA Nationals 2003 are scheduled for October in Lake Wales. And the competition will be a repeat showdown between the Golden Knights, Airspeed Vertical and DeLand Majik. However, for now, Majik has the money in the pockets and another big-meet victory in the log books.
